18 May 2025 — Mega Fortris Group, in collaboration with the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia and Volunteers Unite, organised a beach clean-up at Tanjung Harapan. We saw the participation of 30 dedicated volunteers who were committed to making a positive environmental impact.
During the clean-up, volunteers had collected a total of 81.6 kg of trash. Of this, 4.6 kg (approximately 5.6%) was identified as recyclable materials, which included clean water bottles without caps, batteries, and cans. Despite having collected so much, a majority of the collected trash was unfortunately not recyclable, as a large portion included styrofoam plastics that had been discarded. Additionally, the team had managed to gather 0.4 kg of cigarette butts, an indicator of both the issue of smoking-related litter on our beaches, as well as the culture of heavy smoking.
Mr. Alfred Samuel Mariyaras, a representative of the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia, emphasised the challenges of environmental conservation, stating, “Whenever we do things like this, we can only save 10%.” He further educated participants on the types of waste that are recyclable, aiming to enhance future clean-up efficiency and public awareness.
The collection of cigarette butts was a wake-up call for responsible disposal of smoking materials. Smokers are encouraged to use designated disposal methods to prevent environmental contamination and protect marine life.
By 10:00 AM, the clean-up wrapped up with smiles all around. A big thanks to our amazing volunteers! Their energy and teamwork made a real difference, showing just how powerful a community can be when we come together for the planet.
Mega Fortris extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants and partners for their invaluable contributions to this meaningful endeavor.
